Over the counter toothpastes that have been approved by the ADA are fine for most people, but even those that claim to have extra protective powers or ingredients that will reduce tooth sensitivity, may not be sufficient for some.
People who continue to have cavities even though they follow a strict home regimen for brushing and flossing fall into what is called the “high risk” category. For them an OTC brand just doesn’t provide adequate protection from tooth decay. Dentists sometimes recommend a prescription toothpaste for patients who are so cavity prone.
Fluoride is the element that strengthens our tooth enamel so that it can protect our teeth from the threat of tooth decay. A prescription toothpaste contains a significantly higher level of fluoride than any toothpaste that you may find on the shelves of your favorite drugstore.

Studies have shown that prescription toothpastes work well for patients who are at high risk for cavities as well as for those whose teeth are extremely sensitive due to gum disease or deterioration of the tooth enamel. Ask your dentist if you might benefit from the effects of a prescription strength toothpaste.
