Gum disease in it’s earliest form is a common complaint among dental patients. Our mouths are full of natural bacteria, most of which is harmless but some of which feeds on the sugar and starch in the foods that we eat to form the sticky substance we call plaque.

Gingivitis develops as an inflammation of the gums. The gums will appear swollen and the patient may notice some bleeding after brushing or flossing. A professional cleaning by a dental hygienist will usually eradicate the symptoms at this initial stage of gum disease. The patient will then be advised to step up his regimen of daily oral health habits.

If gingivitis is left to fester the plaque buildup will eventually turn to tartar. At this point no amount of brushing or flossing will be adequate, tartar has to be scraped away with a specifically designed dental instrument.

The most advanced and serious stage of gum disease is periodontitis. The gums will begin to recede from the teeth forming “pockets” that fill with bacteria and lead to infection. The infection can in turn cause deterioration of the bone structure leaving the patient at risk for tooth loss.

A genetic tendency toward gum disease can’t be avoided, but there are other risk factors that can certainly be controlled. A patient who smokes for instance, is making himself a prime candidate. Breaking the habit will definitely lower his risk.
