Sedation dentistry has proven to be a godsend to patients who feared their dental appointments so much that they just stopped making them. Oral sedation is a very popular choice of relaxant and often used for the relief of anxiety, but it may not do away with the need for a local anesthetic.
Your dentist will ask that you take the sedative at least an hour before the scheduled time of your procedure. The effects that you feel will vary according to the kind of medication that you have been given and the dosage, but in any case you will need to arrange for someone to drive you to the office and home again.
Oral sedatives are advantageous to all patients who suffer from anxiety but they are also beneficial for those of us who gag easily or require more than the average dose of Novocaine. If you need to have several fillings done at one time or require some other lengthy procedure oral sedation can make it much easier to go through. IV sedation is another option but patients who have a phobia about needles prefer the oral means.
Any sedation drug can present the danger of toxic interaction. Patients should tell their dentist about any other medications they are taking at the time of the procedure.
