Keep Track Of Your Medications

Every member of your family will probably need to take some kind of medication at one time or another.  Adults however, are more likely to have had a doctor’s prescription filled or to be using an over the counter remedy related to an ongoing medical condition.  One of the first things a family dentist will ask for when taking a patient history is a list of current medications and dosages.

Most medications come with certain side effects, some of which can affect our oral health.  Dry mouth for instance, can mean a lack in the flow of saliva which in turn can lead to tooth decay.  Many medications are known to cause some level of dryness in the mouth.  If a sufficient supply of saliva isn’t maintained the food particles that get caught between our teeth cannot be washed away.  The longer they remain there the greater the risk for decay.

People who suffer from emphysema or some other lung disease often find relief with the help of inhalers.  Breathing medication through the mouth sometimes leads to a type of fungal infection commonly known as thrush, which can produce painful mouth sores.

Medications often relate to oral health but if your dentist is aware of what medicines you are taking he can be on the lookout for telltale symptoms of any dangerous interactions.
