Your oral health is as important as your safety

We know you have probably increased your cooking and baking. Perhaps, you have been eating and drinking more than usual too. (You probably had a slice of cake for breakfast.)  Well, what else can we do during quarantine right? There’s nothing wrong with having a good time in the kitchen. We know it’s fun and it’s an essential life skill that you are learning. However, do not forget about your oral health. Don’t just avoid the virus, we also want you to avoid cavities. Keep in mind that these foods can greatly impact your teeth too. Some food can cause some serious damage to your overall dental health in the long run.

Brushing your teeth is the first step to healthy teeth and gums

Good oral health begins with brushing your teeth. Brushing your teeth alone decreases the chances of getting gum disease. It is also an essential step to avoid cavities. Keeping the surface of your teeth nice and clean at all times will keep cavities away. Make sure to brush your teeth well in the morning and at night.

Here are some effective ways to keep your oral health in tip-top shape.

  • Brush your teeth

At a young age, you were taught about brushing your teeth. We cannot stress enough the importance of toothbrushing.  It is the basic step for good oral health. Make sure to brush your teeth twice a day.

Tip: Use a toothbrush with soft bristles to avoid irritating your gums. You may also opt for an electric or battery-operated toothbrush. Make sure to properly store and clean your toothbrush.

  • Limit your sugar intake

Limiting your sugar intake is also helpful for your overall health. Too much sugar can penetrate the surface of your teeth. When sugar gets combined with saliva and bacteria present in your mouth, it can cause plaque. Plaque can dissolve enamel that can lead to tooth decay.

Tip: Avoid sugary drinks. Liquids can easily penetrate your teeth. Try to brush your teeth right away after having sugar-loaded food.

  • Be careful with bread

You have been probably making bread lately, but bread can contribute to oral health problems too. Especially white bread. It forms a paste that can stay in the crevices of your teeth. Your saliva will also break the starches into sugar. So, easy on that white fluffy bread.

Tip: Instead of making or buying white bread, choose bread made in whole grains. It is less-refined and it can not be easily broken down into sugar.

  • Do not forget about your tongue

Many tend to neglect the tongue. Your tongue needs to be cleaned as much as your teeth. It can house bacteria too. A dirty tongue can cause bad breath. It is proven that cleaning your tongue prevents bad breath. Tongue scrapers can remove sulfur compounds found in our mouth that cause bad breath. Start buying tongue scrapers along with a toothbrush.
