The recent report by the American Press concerning the validity of flossing our teeth has led to a lot of controversy for professionals and the public alike. The report states in essence that there is just not enough proof to support the longtime belief that flossing every day is a legitimate preventive for tooth decay.

According to the report the AP followed 25 case studies to find out if there was significant improvement in the oral health of those who brushed and flossed regularly and those who brushed but didn’t floss. The findings led them to the conclusion that there was little evidence that flossing made a substantial difference.

There has always been some dispute between the makers of water piks and the proponents of flossing string. Flossing advocates maintain that water piks simply rinse while flossing actually cleans the plaque from the teeth. The reality is that most dentists recommend using dental floss and a water pik in a concerted effort to achieve the best results possible.

A lot more research will need to be done to notably dismiss the value of daily flossing. In the meantime take the advice that your dentist offers when it comes to a regimen to maintain your personal oral health.
