The modern manual toothbrush came into being with the invention of Dupont’s nylon in the 1930’s.  In the 50’s the softer bristle version was introduced.  Since then there have been subtle changes in design but the manual toothbrush as a tool in the maintenance of our oral health continues to be a standard resource.

The electric toothbrush appeared on the scene in the 1960’s but the original ones were awkward to handle and they were not rechargeable.  After improvements were made the electric toothbrush evolved into an efficient and convenient way to care for our teeth and gums.

An electric toothbrush is the more expensive choice.  You can get a basic version at a bargain price or you can purchase a more elaborate - and expensive - model.  Electric toothbrushes make brushing easier and are often recommended for young children just learning how to take care of their teeth or seniors who may find it hard to manipulate a manual brush because of the onset of arthritis or some other affliction.  Dentists recommend that we brush twice a day for two minutes at a time.  A lot of electric toothbrushes come with an automatic timer.

A manual toothbrush has its advantages as well.  It is an effective tool for the removal of the daily plaque that can lead to tooth decay and it can be used almost anywhere at any time.
